Books and Publications

The Society publishes books under a number of imprints. The principal ones are the Provincial Historical Research Group (PHRG) and the London Historical Research Group (LHRG), both of which add new titles on a regular basis. Additionally, there are occasional books produced by the OS (of which only one is currently in print). We also offer a select series relating to Bus Garages and Depots, which are published, privately as DDP, by David Domin.

Current titles in the individual categories are listed below, including full details of how to obtain them.

SCOT.MOG A complete history of Bus Garages and Outstations, Tram & Trolley-bus Depots of Major Operators in Scotland.

    1. Most bus and tram related publications tend to concentrate on the vehicles and the routes operated. Rarely has any attention been focussed on the bricks and mortar of the bus operations large and small. A distinct feature of Scottish bus operations is the copious sprinkling of outstations in far flung outposts, both on the mainland and many islands. A total of around 880 locations of all types appear in the lists. Price £13.00

The area covered is roughly from Dartford around the coast of Kent and Sussex to Portsmouth and north to Oxford and Bicester, including several incursions into London. The records begin in the 1840s and run through the horse, electric and motor eras to a current list as at January 2016.Price £10.00

The area covered is roughly west of a line from Tewkesbury to Basingstoke to Fareham, and includes Hants & Dorset, Wilts & Dorset, Bristol Tramways/OC, Great Western Railway, Western/Southern National, Devon General, and coach operators like Greenslades, Wessex and Shamrock & Rambler. Among the smaller operators covered are Hutchings & Cornelius, Bere Regis & District and Western Greyhound. MOG.16

  • MIDLAND.MOG

    MIDLAND.MOG

    1. This publication, the seventh in the MOG history series, sets out to record the locations of operating centres (bus garages and outstations, tram and trolleybus depots) of all the major bus and tram operators in the Midlands, from the earliest days of horse omnibuses up to the present day. The geographical scope is bounded by the counties of Shropshire, Staffordshire, Derbyshire (excluding the Glossop area), Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Herefordshire. However some records spill over into neighbouring areas. The records begin in the 1840s and run through the horse, electric and motor eras to a current list as at June 2017. A notable feature covered in this edition is the reversion to horse bus operations by the Birmingham & Midland Motor Omnibus Co. Ltd. between October 1907 and May 1912. This did not prevent the Company later becoming the largest operator in the area, and in BET. A total of around 700 locations of all types appear. Horse bus yards account for 61 and horse trams 22. The total of additional electric and steam tram depots is just 65. The remaining c555 are motor bus (and trolleybus) garages and outstations. There are 46 pages of text interspersed with several pictures and maps, followed by the picture section of 26 pages, a total of 105 pictures, 45 of them in colour.

These publications can be ordered direct from David Domin, 17 Litherland Crescent, St Helens, Mersyside WA11 9AJ.
