London's Buses Volume Three - Country Independents 1919-1939 Part Two

Many of those interested in the history of London's buses - and especially its independent operators - have on our shelves copies of London's Buses Volumes One and Two.

London's Buses Volume One by Ken Blacker, Ron Lunn and Reg Westgate describes The Independent Era 1922-1934, covering the old Central Area and published in 1977.  It was followed in 1983 by Volume Two, sub-titled Country Independents 1919-1939 Part One.  Substantial, authoritative works, these books were self-published by the authors.

The London Historical Research Group of the Omnibus Society is delighted finally to be able to publish Part Three, Country Independents 1919-1939 Part Two.  Although Ron Lunn and Reg Westgate are no longer with us, a team from LHRG has worked with Ken Blacker to complete and publish this book, started so long ago.

Continuing the comprehensive history of the independent bus and coach operators in the former London Transport Country Area before World War Two, with the same authoritative style and derived from a similarly wide range of original sources, this 512-page hardback book covers every known operator in the area from Watford, Hemel Hempstead and Aylesbury southwards to Slough and Windsor.

More than a hundred different operators are covered; some only lasted for only a few months, many were taken over by London Transport following the London Passenger Transport Act of 1933, while a few survived long into the post-war era. Among the famous names covered are Amersham & District, Aylesbury Motor Bus Company, Bream, Bucks Express, Filkins & Ainsworth, Lewis, Penn Bus Company, Premier Line, Red Rover, Rover Bus Service and Skylark.

The book is being distributed on behalf of LHRG by MDS Books, and is NOW AVAILABLE via their website at www.mdsbooks.co.uk/catalog/product/view/id/16424.
